Training for a marathon is not easy. One thing that seems to alleviate the pangs of crazy, is the comfort of knowing you’re running for a cause – a reason to log the miles – something bigger than yourself. For my first marathon I ran for Ovarian Cancer Research and Race for a Cure Africa – both close to my heart.
A good friend of mine and RBF extraordinaire, Molly, has always told me what a great organization St. Jude is. Usually I’m under the impression that all causes are good, unless they support Trump for President, but that’s neither here nor there. It wasn’t until Molly pushed me to join her fundraising team The Dudes for the Nashville Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in 2015, that I truly learned about the amazing work they do.
For those of you who don’t know, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a pediatric treatment and research facility in Memphis, focused on children’s catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is one of a few pediatric research organizations in the United States where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. At all. In addition to providing medical services to eligible patients, St. Jude also assists families with transportation, lodging, and meals.
Molly has also expressed what a life changing experience running the Memphis Marathon is. You are surrounded by the families and children at St. Jude. The emotion and power is unmatched. This year, Molly challenged me to not only fundraising the bare minimum to be a Hero, but join the board of her fundraising group The Dudes, and commit to fundraising $2,500. I’m always saying I want to be more involved in the St. Louis community, and this group of young adults is committed to supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with events, fundraising and (what I love the most) team spirit. #CheerleaderForLife #GOOOOOOOODudes!
In the wise words of Woody Harrelson circa Zombieland, ‘Its time to nut up, or shut up.’
